Habitat: Pairies, rock outcrops, roadsides from Mass to GA. and TX to MN

Seasons: Late spring to early fall

Active Chemical Ingredient: Quinine: C20H24N2O2
  • Used to kill the malaria parasites living in red blood cells
  • Quinine is a white crystalline alkaloid having antipyretic (fever-reducing), antimalarial, analgesic (painkilling), and anti-inflammatory properties

 Uses of Specimen: 
  • Poultice for burns (use leaves)
  • Treatment of Malaria
  • Treatment of Fever (use flowering tops in tea)
  • Badder ailments (kidney) (use roots in tea)

  2. Hi Megan! Thank you for this information. Someone mentioned to me that Parthenium integrifolium doesn’t contain any actual quinine. Obviously, this post says that it does (which I believe). But for the sake of full investigation, do you have a source to point to that states quinine is an active constituent in Parthenium integrifolium? Thank you!
